Project
Fundacja Drzewo i Jutro has once again supported nature conservation efforts in Canada by making a donation towards the purchase of the Puzzle Lake (DuShane) property in the province of Ontario. Thanks to our financial support, 109 acres (approximately 44 hectares) of ecologically valuable land were acquired. Protecting this land is of considerable importance for preserving local ecosystems and biodiversity.
The property is located immediately adjacent to Puzzle Lake Provincial Park and Dog Lake Conservation Reserve, managed by Quinte Conservation. Its location is particularly important for maintaining habitat connectivity and strengthening ecological corridors linking existing protected areas. The property lies within the Mellon Lake Focal Area, identified by the Ontario Conservation Accelerator (OCA) as one of the priority areas for nature conservation under the Connected Corridors initiative. The initiative aims to secure ecologically valuable land and establish a cohesive network of protected areas that maintains natural connections between ecosystems.
The acquired property has retained its natural character. Open water covers nearly half of its area, while the remainder consists of wetlands and mixed forests. These ecosystems play an important role in maintaining biodiversity, retaining water and mitigating the effects of climate change. They also provide natural habitats for numerous plant and animal species.
As part of the project, OCA negotiated the purchase of the property for 63% of its fair market value. In addition, Ontario’s Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks has expressed interest in acquiring the land in the future, which could contribute to the expansion of the existing Puzzle Lake Provincial Park.
Although the park currently has limited visitor infrastructure, it is a popular destination for canoeing, hiking and backcountry camping enthusiasts. Ontario Parks is considering further development of the park to make the area more accessible to visitors while preserving its exceptional natural features.
The acquisition of the Puzzle Lake property represents an important contribution to efforts to protect natural habitats, preserve biodiversity and strengthen the existing network of protected areas in the province of Ontario.
The project forms part of Fundacja Drzewo i Jutro’s long-standing commitment to nature conservation and the preservation of valuable ecosystems for future generations.
